Five ABUS EOT Cranes installed at a manufacturer of Slew Rings
Morris Material Handling SA (pty) LTD (www.morris.co.za), a wholly-owned South African company and the agent of ABUS Kransysteme GmbH in South Africa, recently supplied five double girder electric overhead travelling cranes to TSR (Titanus Slew Rings, www.tsr.co.za).
TSR was founded in 1975 as a general engineering concern. Workmanship, expertise and service to the highest standard ensured steady growth, requiring a move to larger premises for a third time. In 1985 a strategic decision was taken to focus and further specialise the production facilities towards the manufacturing and reconditioning of slew bearings. The company was renamed Titanus Slew Rings and moved to the wholly-owned, presently occupied premises.
Titanus Slew Rings (TSR) is today a global leader in the manufacturing and the supply of ball and roller type slew bearings. Their extensive manufacturing facilities—consisting of 12,000 m², their property size is 27,500 m²—situated east of Johannesburg, South Africa, allow for the complete in-house manufacturing and reconditioning of slew bearings, with sizes ranging from OD 300 mm to OD 6,500 mm. Their manufacturing facilities consist of CNC turning, CNC drilling, tapping and milling, gear-cutters, CNC grinders, and lifting equipment.

Their flexibility and diversity furthermore allow for the application-specific design of products to meet exact customer requirements and the supply within the shortest possible delivery period.
Material handling is facilitated by the use of five ABUS double girder cranes type ZLK and they are designed to be used in the loading and off-loading of materials in the different stages mentioned above within the TSR facility. The ABUS cranes consist of 3 x 10 tonne ZLK, 1 x 32/10 tonne ZLK, and a 63/32 tonne ZLK. The 63 tonne crane has an auxiliary hoist of 32 tonnes, which is to be used in the heavy lifting machine bay for loading and load-turning of large diameter slew rings with diameters of up to 6 m. Several types of ABUS wire rope hoists are used at TSR, among them the GM7000, a double rail trolley with twin hoist, featuring a maximum load capacity of 120 t.
The cranes all have the same span of 23.85 m with 3 of the cranes having a height of lift of 11.7 m and 2 others with a higher lifting height of 13.3 m. All cranes are supplied with walkways along the bridge girders for easy maintenance. The cranes are controlled by radio remote controls. The cranes’ user is thus able to operate the cranes from a safe position and they are continually informed on the loads suspended from the hoist by the large LED load display mounted on the crane.
